A Bone Density Scan evaluates the risk of developing common fractures, Osteoporosis and Osteopenia.
Millions of Americans already have osteoporosis or are at a high risk. Risk factors include - aging, being thin, family history, and certain medications. Women are at a higher risk for osteoporosis than men, and the risk increases with age. A bone density scan is a quick and painless study, and results are immediate.
The Bone Density scan is a diagnostic tool that uses low-dose X-rays to measure the amount of minerals in a patient's bones. It helps to determine whether a patient has osteoporosis or if they are at risk of developing it. At MD Health and Wellness, we utilize the latest technology and techniques to achieve outstanding results for our patients. With our high-quality DEXA machine, we formulate the most accurate results to help our patients both feel and look their best.
As we age, our bones become fragile. Weak bones can impact your daily life or future. Enjoy your favorite activities and continue creating memories by staying healthy, without the worry of fracture.
Your test will still work and results will still be accurate. Our technologist will have no problem scanning other areas of your body that do no have metal in them.
Whether you are feeling any symptoms or none at all, coming in for a bone density test is a good idea. We can look at your results and have an in-depth conversation about your risk factors, what you should look for moving forward and the healthiest habits to implement for your overall bone health.
Our bone density scan takes about 20 minutes. This includes a brief questionnaire before as well as the scan.
You will remove jewelry, any metal belongings and shoes before laying down on our Hologic Discovery DEXA machine. Our technologist will run scans over three areas - your spine, left hip and right hip. There is almost no radiation emitted in this scan, as the machine is the gold standard of the market.
We ask you to wear clothing that does not have any metal on it, such as jeans for the zippers etc. There is no preparation before the bone density test.
At MD Breast Imaging, you will know your results during your appointment. Your report will be emailed to you and sent to your physician on file.
